PHOENIX -- The Arizona Department of Transportation is issuing a weekend travel alert because of two Valley freeway closures.
Construction crews will install the last two sections of a pedestrian bridge over the I-17 at the Central Arizona Project canal. The detour around the I-17 closure is 18 miles long. ADOT recommends drivers have enough fuel to travel the alternate route.
The Loop 202 (Red Mountain Freeway) will also shut down this weekend. ADOT workers need to install overhead message boards for the freeway in North Mesa.
Here are the full details from ADOT on the closures:
• Southbound I-17 closed between Loop 303 and Happy Valley Road from 11:30 p.m. Friday to 4 a.m. Saturday (June 9). Southbound frontage road closure begins at 10 p.m. Friday. The northbound I-17 off-ramp at Dixileta Drive and the eastbound Loop 303 ramp to southbound I-17 also closed. DETOUR: Traffic will travel west on Loop 303, south on Lake Pleasant Parkway and east on Happy Valley Road to reconnect with I-17. Drivers should consider adjusting their travel schedules if possible to avoid the overnight closure. There are limited services along 18-mile detour route.
• Eastbound Loop 202 (Red Mountain Freeway) closed between Country Club Drive and Gilbert Road in Mesa from 3 a.m. Saturday to 5 a.m. Sunday (June 10) for installation of an overhead message board. DETOUR: Eastbound Loop 202 traffic will exit at Country Club Drive and travel east on McKellips Road to Gilbert Road.
