PHOENIX -- Before you head out this weekend, make a note of these two Valley freeway closures. The projects will affect travel in north Mesa, along with access to the east side of Sky Harbor Airport.
The Arizona Department of Transportation says crews will make pavement improvements and paint lane stripes on the SR 143. The closure also will impact traffic on northbound 48th Street approaching Broadway Road.
The Loop 202 (Red Mountain Freeway) will also close for the installation of an overhead message sign. ADOT encourages drivers to allow extra travel time or use other routes while the following weekend restrictions are in place:
• Northbound State Route 143 (Hohokam Expressway) closed between Broadway Road and Washington Street from 9 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday (June 18). No access to northbound SR 143 from Interstate 10 or 48th Street. DETOUR: I-10 drivers can access Sky Harbor Airport via the west entrance from 24th Street or exit to northbound 40th Street and use eastbound University Drive and northbound 44th Street. Drivers on northbound 48th Street will need to turn at Broadway Road.
• Westbound Loop 202 (Red Mountain Freeway) closed between Gilbert Road and Country Club Drive from 3 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday (June 16) for installation of an overhead message sign. DETOUR: Exit at Gilbert Road and use westbound McKellips Road and northbound Country Club Drive to reconnect with Loop 202.
