SEDONA, Ariz. (AP) -- A narrow, twisty section of a scenic Arizona highway is open ahead of schedule.

The Arizona Department of Transportation says a $2 million project to resurface three miles of switchbacks on State Route 89A is complete. Crews also removed rocks from canyon walls and repaired a bridge.

The department says the contractor earned a $104,000 bonus for finishing more than two weeks early. The Transportation Department had expected to have the switchbacks that are prone to rock falls closed until July 2.

The highway runs between Sedona and Flagstaff, and through Oak Creek Canyon.

Transportation officials say crews will return next month to complete striping of the highway, resulting in single-lane closures.
