Drivers should expect long delays, consider alternate routes

PHOENIX — Drivers should anticipate lengthy delays on Interstate 10 between Phoenix and Casa Grande through the afternoon commute because of a serious crash involving hazardous materials, according to the Arizona Department of Transportation. The highway’s westbound lanes are closed north of Casa Grande, but significant backups have been observed in both directions on this major travel corridor.

A red Ford pickup truck was traveling eastbound when it crossed the median and hit a semi-truck head-on in the westbound lanes. Another semi rear-ended the crashed semi, causing its trailer to roll over onto its side. There were 44,000 pounds of formic acid in the trailer and some of it leaked onto the roadway.

Hazmat crews are working on containing the acid and clearing it from the road. The process could take several hours due to the danger of the acid.

The driver of the pickup truck was taken to Maricopa Medical Center in critical condition.

All westbound traffic is being detoured near Casa Grande onto state routes 387 and 87. ADOT is advising drivers to anticipate significant delays and to consider alternate routes around the Casa Grande area.

Drivers traveling on westbound I-10 from Tucson to Phoenix should consider driving north on State Route 79 through Florence and then to US 60 at Florence Junction. Travelers going from Phoenix to Tucson should consider taking US 60 eastbound through the East Valley, and turning south on SR 79 at Florence Junction.

ADOT anticipates the westbound I-10 closure and heavy congestion in both directions could extend into the afternoon commute. Drivers should plan for extended travel times or consider delaying travel until the highway reopens.

Casa Grande is about an hour southeast of Phoenix.
