PHOENIX -- Part of the Loop 101 freeway in Scottsdale was closed Friday morning as authorities dealt with a suicidal person on an overpass.

"At about 8:30 this morning we were dispatched out here regarding an individual that had apparently climbed over the fence and appeared as if he was about to jump off the freeway bridge," said Cmdr. Greg Anderson with Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community Police Dept.

It took several hours but the state Department of Public Safety said negotiators were were able to get the suicidal man off of the Thomas Road overpass without anybody getting hurt.

Investigators said the man appeared to be intoxicated.

Traffic in both directions was backed up for miles as drivers were routed off the 101.

The Department of Transportation said the closure for northbound traffic began a mile south at McDowell Road. Northbound traffic was able to re-enter the 101 at Indian School, which is a mile north of Thomas Road.

Southbound traffic was exiting at Thomas Road and getting get back on at McDowell.

ADOT was advising motorists to exit well ahead of Thomas.
