PHOENIX — Both directions of Loop 303 Freeway have reopened at Camelback Road following police action, according to the Arizona Department of Transportation.

GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) -- Authorities say a suicidal man holed up in his vehicle has led to the closure of a busy freeway in Glendale.

Maricopa County Sheriff's Office spokesman Officer Chris Hegstrom said 86-year-old Frank Schultz of Sun City West was taken into custody at approximately 6:25 p.m. 

After several hours of negotiations, Schultz was tased and removed from the vehicle without injuries to deputies. 

Schultz was transported by ambulance to West Valley Hospital for further evaluation. 

A handgun was located in the vehicle. 

Schultz is facing two counts of aggravated assault.

GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) -- Authorities say a suicidal man holed up in his vehicle has led to the closure of a busy freeway in Glendale.

The Maricopa County Sheriff's Office says the man reportedly talked about killing himself at his Sun City home but left around 2 p.m. before deputies arrived.

Sheriff's spokesman Christopher Hegstrom says deputies located him traveling south on Loop 303 and were able to stop the car.

However, the suspect, who is believed to be armed, is not getting out of the car.

Police officers from Glendale and Peoria are also at the scene.

The Arizona Department of Public Safety has closed Loop 303 between Camelback and Bethany Home roads to traffic in both directions.

LITCHFIELD PARK, Ariz. -- Both directions of Loop 303 are closed at Camelback Road because of police action, according to the Arizona Department of Transportation.

Maricopa County Sheriff's Office spokesman Officer Chris Hegstrom said a man made suicidal threats at his Sun City home and then headed south on the freeway.

Sheriff's deputies and the Arizona Department of Public Safety were able to stop the car, but the man is reportedly refusing to come out. Hegstrom said he is armed.

There is no estimated time to reopen the highway. Motorists should expect delays and try to use alternate routes.

Southbound traffic is exiting the highway at Bethany Home Road and northbound traffic at Indian School Road.
