AVONDALE, Ariz. -- The Maricopa County Sheriff's Office said no drugs or alcohol were found in a car that went into a canal Friday morning.

Derek Limon, 27, of Phoenix, was found dead inside the vehicle.

At about 3 a.m. someone called 911 to report a vehicle in a canal at 99th Avenue and Thomas Road.

The witness said the car braked just south of Thomas Road then went into the canal and flipped, according to MCSO spokesman Officer Christopher Hegstrom.

Police and fire units from Phoenix and Avondale responded to the call and found a small passenger car in an irrigation canal.

The cause of death will be determined pending the results of a toxicology report from the medical examiner’s office. No foul play is suspected.

Police shut down 99th Avenue in both directions from Thomas Road to McDowell Road for several hours on Friday morning.
