CHANDLER, Ariz. -- Good news for East Valley drivers. The Arizona Department of Transportation opened a new stretch of a High Occupancy Vehicle lane in Chandler. Crews completed the carpool lane along the eastbound Loop 202 (Santan Freeway) ahead of schedule, on Sunday night.
Five miles of the new eastbound Loop 202 HOV lane between Dobson and Gilbert roads are open for rush-hour commuters. Afternoon drivers headed east will experience a little relief with the new carpool lane.
Additional stretches of HOV lanes will open later this year as part of ADOT’s $85 million regional freeway project to widen Loop 202 between Interstate 10 and Gilbert Road. The 12-mile project includes direct Loop 202 HOV lane connections to and from I-10 as well as Loop 101.
HOV lanes in the Phoenix area are limited to vehicles with two or more passengers, buses, motorcycles, alternative fuel vehicles and a limited number of hybrid cars from 6 a.m. to 9 a.m. and from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. Mondays through Fridays. However, the new carpool lane is available to all vehicles during non-rush hour times and on weekends.
For information about this stretch of freeway, or any state highway throughout Arizona, drivers can call 511. This is a recorded line with updated road conditions from ADOT.
