MESA, Ariz. -- A motorcycle rider was killed in a rush-hour wreck on southbound Loop 202 Santan Freeway near the Guadalupe Road exit in the East Valley Wednesday morning.
Preliminary information indicates that a middle-aged male motorcyclist was in the far right travel lane when he changed lanes and hit a white Mitsubishi sedan, according to Officer Bob Bailey with the Department of Public Safety.
The motorcyclist lost control and was thrown from his bike. He died at the scene. Bailey said the man was wearing a helmet at the time of the collision.
The driver of the car was not hurt in the crash.
Aerial video from the scene showed the motorcycle on its side in the middle of the closed freeway.
The victim's identity has not been released and the crash is still under investigation.
SR 202 is closed approaching the U.S. 60 southbound with traffic being diverted onto U.S. 60. The ramps from U.S. 60 to southbound SR 202 are also closed. DPS hopes to have the roadway opened by 11 a.m.
