PHOENIX – Police are searching for the driver of a truck that hit and killed a woman on Interstate 10 Monday night.

According to investigators, the driver of a 1965 Chevy pickup truck attempted to enter I-10 in the eastbound lanes from Ray Road and approached traffic, slowing for a disabled motorist, then swerved left to avoid the slower traffic.

The passenger and driver in the pickup were ejected through the passenger side door into oncoming freeway traffic in the eastbound lanes of I-10, according to Bart Graves with the Arizona Department of Public Safety.

The pickup continued and hit the center divider wall.

Graves said an unidentified truck struck the ejected female passenger and left the area.

Celia Ester Owens, 44, of Maricopa, was pronounced dead at the scene.

DPS Officer Carrick Cook said investigators are treating this as a homicide.

The driver of the 1965 pickup has been identified as Randall Wayne Owens, 54, Maricopa. He was admitted to Chandler Regional Medical Center.

The hit-and-run vehicle is described as a truck with obvious signs of a crash. Anyone with any information on this truck is asked to call 602-223-2111.
