PHOENIX -- Drivers traveling to New Mexico on eastbound Interstate 10 on Sunday morning (Feb. 19) need to be aware of a brief closure at the State Route 90 traffic interchange near Benson.  That is some 40 miles east of Tucson. The Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) will close the stretch of freeway to allow an oversized tractor trailer to travel west on a one-mile section of the eastbound lanes.

The closure is scheduled to last about 30-minutes, starting at 7:30 am.  That is when the oversized truck will make the tirp from State Route 80 to State Route 90, where it will exit the I-10.

The closure is the third of a series of oversized loads traveling from Texas to California, where energy plants are under construction. Sunday’s closure is to accommodate a truck hauling a turbine to a coal-powered energy plant in Palm Springs, Calif.

Drivers are encouraged to adjust their travel schedules in order to avoid the closure at that hour or allow extra travel time.

ADOT says the trucks are too long and too wide to negotiate the westbound exit at SR 90 and too heavy to use a bridge on State Route 82, which would otherwise provide an alternate route.

Westbound traffic on I-10 will not be affected.
