Phoenix drivers will run into a few weekend freeway construction closures on both the I-10 and the State Route 51. Make a note of these projects from the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) before you head out so you can avoid the traffic tie-ups:
*Eastbound Interstate 10 closed between the I-17 ‘Stack’ interchange and the State Route 51 ‘Mini-Stack’ from 9 p.m. Friday to 11:30 p.m. Saturday (July 28) for tunnel maintenance and pavement repairs. The eastbound I-10 on-ramp at Seventh Street will be open only for traffic connecting to northbound SR 51 or eastbound Loop 202. The southbound SR 51 and westbound Loop 202 ramps to eastbound I-10 will remain open. DETOUR: Eastbound I-10 traffic will detour south on I-17 and reconnect with I-10 near Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport. Local drivers, including West Valley fans going to the Diamondbacks or Rattlers games Saturday night, should consider alternate eastbound routes. Drivers can also use eastbound McDowell Road to southbound SR 51 to access I-10.
*Westbound Interstate 10 closed overnight between Seventh Street and Seventh Avenue from 9 p.m. Saturday to 7 a.m. Sunday (July 29) for tunnel maintenance. Ramps from southbound State Route 51 and westbound Loop 202 to westbound I-10 closed. DETOUR: Westbound I-10 traffic can use northbound I-17 starting near Sky Harbor Airport to avoid tunnel closure. Westbound I-10 traffic exiting at Seventh Street will detour beyond closure on McDowell Road.
*Northbound State Route 51 narrowed to one lane between Northern Avenue and Shea Boulevard from 11 p.m. Friday to 3 p.m. Saturday (July 28) for sign installation. Northbound off-ramp at 32nd Street closed. DETOUR: Please allow extra travel time and use caution in work zone. Exit at Shea Boulevard to access 32nd Street.
*Northbound State Route 51 closed between Shea Boulevard and Bell Road from 10 p.m. Saturday to 3 p.m. Sunday (July 29) for sign installation. DETOUR: Traffic will exit and use eastbound Shea Boulevard, northbound Tatum Boulevard and westbound Bell Road to travel beyond closure.
