PHOENIX -- It's on of those routes that's almost always a huge headache during rush hour, but starting today, things on a section Interstate 17 are going to be looking a bit better.
The Arizona Department of Transportation on Thursday morning opened a three-mile stretch of I-17 between Happy Valley Road and Loop 101, and there are two new southbound lanes for drivers to use.
The project is part of a $142 million project to add two lanes in both directions of I-17 between Carefree Highway and Loop 101.
Completion of the new lanes between Jomax Road and Carefree Highway is expected to be completed in early 2010.
