TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) -- The Arizona Department of Public Safety is stepping up patrols along Interstate 19 after an increased number of traffic fatalities along the southern Arizona highway. DPS says traffic deaths on I-19 have nearly tripled from a year ago.

Officers will use marked and unmarked cars as well as motorcycles along I-19.

Drivers will be targeted for speeding, aggressive driving, fatigue, impairment and unsafe lane changes.

A DPS spokesman tells the Arizona Daily Star in the first half of 2010, officers responded to three fatal collisions on I-19. For the first six months of 2011, eight people have died in six crashes.

The 63-mile Interstate 19 connects Interstate 10 and Tucson with Nogales and Mexico.
