PHOENIX – Drivers in the Goodyear area now have a new stretch of Cotton Lane to use between McDowell and Thomas roads, allowing construction crews to close a nearby section of Loop 303 for freeway expansion work.

The changes are part of an ongoing project to improve Loop 303 into a six-lane freeway and connect it with Interstate 10 in two years, according to the Arizona Department of Transportation.

The newly constructed Cotton Lane, with two lanes in each direction, runs north and south just west of the Loop 303 work zone. Traffic was detoured from Loop 303 this past weekend and switched to Cotton Lane.

Construction crews will continue work on a $134 million project to complete a traffic interchange linking Loop 303 with Interstate 10, according to ADOT. The work, which started last November, will also widen Loop 303 to three lanes in each direction as it crosses Thomas Road.

Through a series of ongoing projects that are part of the Maricopa Association of Governments' 20-year Regional Transportation Plan, ADOT is reconstructing Loop 303 into a wider freeway between I-10 and Grand Avenue. All of the improvement work is scheduled for completion by fall 2014.
