FLAGSTAFF - Blinding dust caused a six-car pile-up and shut down both eastbound and westbound Interstate 40 between Flagstaff and Winslow for most of Monday.
Paramedics transported five people to the hospital with moderate injuries.
The Arizona Department of Transportation closed the stretch of I-40 from the Meteor Crater Rest Area (milepost 235) to milepost 252 due to high winds and blowing dust.
The highway remained closed for several hours until visibility improved. Drivers were encouraged to avoid the area for the day. The fierce winds and low visibility also led to a number of other accidents.
Drivers can get the latest information about highway restrictions and closures statewide on ADOT's Travel Information site at www.az511.gov or by calling 5-1-1.
