PHOENIX -- Labor Day weekend travelers using northbound I-17 and State Route 87 north of the Phoenix area and eastbound I-10 near Casa Grande were advised to delay their trips Friday afternoon due to heavy traffic backups, according to the Arizona Department of Transportation.
Even after the northbound stretches of both I-17 and SR 87 reopened, lines of traffic stretching several miles remained very slow until this evening.
Northbound I-17 was narrowed to one lane north of Black Canyon City earlier this afternoon due to a disabled commercial truck. Emergency crews have since cleared the highway.
Meanwhile, northbound SR 87 is also open again in the Sunflower area after crews cleaned up wreckage of a non-injury crash involving a vehicle pulling a trailer.
South of Phoenix, eastbound I-10 was narrowed to one lane near Casa Grande because of a crash, resulting in lengthy delays. Travelers were encouraged to use SR 347 or SR 87 as alternate routes.
