(3TV/CBS 5) -

This weekend, once the sun sets, head outside and check out the Perseid meteor shower.

It should be a good one this year with a rate of 60 to 70 meteors per hour.

The best place to view them is getting out of the city lights and get a spot where you can see as much sky as possible.

It will take about 15 minutes for your eyes to fully adjust to the darkness, the best night to see them will be both Saturday night and Sunday night.

A meteor is a rock or debris that enters the Earth’s atmosphere. As it falls towards us, the speed of the rock makes is really hot creating a bright streak we can see from earth. Meteoroids are very small from a piece of dust to the size of a boulder.  Most of them burn up completely in the atmosphere.

Conditions look great for stargazing, we will have a new moon that will set early that night and we are expecting mostly clear skies that night.

Enjoy the show, also if you're out watching the stars look for Mars and Saturn that night. They are also visible until about 2 a.m.
