(3TV/CBS 5) -

After a lackluster winter and spring, we’ve welcomed an active monsoon season that’s brought decent rainfall so far. Now, more good news that even more moisture may be on the horizon.

Recently, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration issued an El Niño Watch. According to the Climate Prediction Center, there’s a 65 percent chance of El Niño conditions developing this fall and about a 70 percent chance they will continue into the winter.

El Niño conditions occur when warmer than average sea-surface temperatures are observed along the equator in the Pacific. It can sometimes change weather patterns around the world. Traditionally, El Niño conditions in the winter bring more storms to the Southwest. That’s not always the case, but it presents at least a better chance for a wetter winter.

Arizona could really use some decent storms that bring good snowpack. Our drought continues to worsen.

While one wet winter won’t solve our long-term drought problem completely, it put a dent in the drought and set us up for less potential destruction heading into next year’s fire season. We'll keep you updated on the potential development of El Niño conditions over the next few months.
