Recently, I got the opportunity to travel to the far northern border of our beautiful state for a series of stories on Monument Valley. This was by far the coolest assignment I’ve ever had.

If you missed the segments on GMAZ, I put them online for you.

After we wrapped up two days of shoots, my photographer, Adrian, and I decided to take a quick trip north into Utah. Monument Valley straddles the Arizona-Utah border, and if you head just 20 minutes north of the border and turn around and face south, you’ll catch the exact view Forrest Gump enjoyed when he finished his cross-country run.

Since that 1994 movie, people have come from around the world to see this iconic spot, and to take their picture on that same stretch of scenic highway.

We noticed plenty of people even dodging traffic to get that shot. I’m guilty of that, too. Just so you know, there typically isn't really much traffic in that area.

Check out these shots from when I took my boys there two years ago. We had to ham it up with our best Forrest Gump impressions.

And I even convinced Adrian that he had to get “the Forrest Gump shot.”

Monument Valley is about five hours from the Valley. If you go, be sure to stop by and see this fun tourist spot. There’s a sign that marks the exact spot.

But that sign is a bit tough to spot, so I’d recommend putting “Forrest Gump Point” into your favorite maps app on your smartphone to find the exact spot as you’re driving through.

It’s a fun spot to check out if you’re in the area. Maybe even a bucket list item to check off?
