CHANDLER, AZ (3TV/CBS 5) -

A Valley man is credited with saving two dogs from drowning in a canal. It happened early Wednesday morning in Chandler.

It was a regular morning along the eastern canal in when Ryan Dunning came across a strange sight.

"I saw two dogs swimming," said Ryan Dunning.

No owners, just the animals.

"My first thought was how long have they been in there," he said.

That's when Ryan sprang into action. He and another jogger were able to fish the two dogs out of the canal and bring them to safety.

But Ryan wasn't just any passerby, he's also a veterinarian -- meaning those two pups were in good hands.

"There was a reason he was running down the canal this morning at that exact time. So it's pretty awesome," said Kelly Dunning.

Ryan scanned the dogs' microchips, and the dogs were home free.

"A single phone call, we got in touch with the owner," said Ryan Dunning.

It was a chance encounter with a happy ending.

"They would have drowned, no doubt. They couldn't have held on forever," said Ryan Dunning.
