A dog restrained by an electronic fence will begin to perceive that the world beyond this invisible barricade is simply not for them. Why? Because the physical pain associated with moving beyond its barriers is too great. We humans are no different. We too have been trained by those who care for us to live constrained by invisible barricades. The only real differences are that the barricades that restrain us from moving beyond our present circumstances are ultimately self- imposed and that the pain associated with leaving our comfort zone will never be as real as those delivered to the wayward pooch.

Let’s face it, our limiting beliefs are almost always a product of our irrational and mythical fears to which we cower in the name of practicality, conformity and/or how we are taught to live our lives. At first blush, this may sound like a dire situation. Yet just the opposite is true. How so? Because as the sole creator of these mythical and irrational fears and the associated restraints you and you alone are capable of unchaining yourself from these limiting beliefs and living the joy-filled life you were destined to live.

That is not to say that there will not be any transitory pain involved. It might feel wrong to act in ways that are inconsistent with the imprinting imposed upon you as a child. Likewise, the judgment of others as you follow an impractical course may give rise to temporary feelings of pain. Instead, it is to say that with rare exception, if you are unhappy with your current circumstances, you have the power to discard and/or transcend these unhappy circumstances immediately if you are willing deal with this transitory pain and unchain yourself from the belief system that ties you to your circumstances.

You might think this is easier said than done. Perhaps. However, based on my experience living unchained was easier done than said because discussing the issue only served to bring forth reasons for inaction. Whereas doing brought forth feelings of joy as progress is being made. Progress towards what you ask – a happier life and my ultimate source of happiness, my greatness. And the best news of all, is that you can just as easily to the same. I know this because you are great!

Yes, you are great. Your greatness is why you were born and it is why you are still alive. It is what you and you alone can bring to the planet. It is what you would bring to the world with your precious time if you did not internalize contrarian voices who out of fear for your safety and numerous other mythical reasons seek to distract you from your greatness.

Why is living your greatness tied to a joyful life? Because the universal intelligence, whatever that means to you, that installed your greatness into you at birth desperately wants it to be actualized and will reward you when you take tangible steps towards your greatness.

What then is the first step? To quote William Shakespeare “Knock … and ask your heart what it doth know.” Might sound a bit esoteric to some, yet my guess is that if you reflected back on your life you would conclude that your heart aka your “gut feelings” are much more connected to reality than the fear based state of affairs your mind creates to ensconce you in an illusory sense of comfort. Thus, all you really need to do is listen to them now - without judgment.

Now please, don’t get me wrong, this is not a call toward drastic measures like quitting your job and running away from home tomorrow. As adults, a modicum of practicality must be honored. Instead, what I am saying is that experience has taught me that joy awaits us when we follow the path communicated to us through our hearts with deliberate intent and courageously move towards our greatness.

To illustrate my point in a grossly simplified way, in April of 2015, when the Arias case was behind me, my heart was telling me that I needed to shift the focus of my life. It was a message that I did not want to hear because of the time and energy I had invested in creating my legal career. Yet, when cancer came into my life, listening to this voice became mandatory. Facing my mortality forced me to realize that a new mission was emerging and all I had to do was stop resisting and allow fate to hurl me out of my comfort zone and into this new mission.

And for all of this, I am grateful. Even though my shift was towards the impractical, it has brought a new sense of joy into my life. It has brought forth the opportunity to help others who are willing to unchain themselves from their fears and live in their greatness. It has brought forth the opportunity to help you live a happier life and to live unchained!
