(Meredith) – It’s a trend that’s becoming more and more popular with thieves: stealing your license plate and replacing it with a fake one.

Police in Albuquerque, New Mexico said one woman’s plate was stolen right after she parked her car. When she and her husband returned, he noticed the plates were different, so he reported it.

"You have a clean license plate on a stolen car, and then you have a stolen license plate on your car, so we will think your car is stolen when it's coming off a different car. You need to be aware guys out there stealing license plates," Officer Simon Drobik told KRQU.

One of the major things criminals who steal plates are counting on is you not paying close attention. So when you return to your car, make sure to double check your plates.
