Daycare workers charged for giving 2-year-olds melatonin

(Meredith) -- Three teachers at a daycare in Des Plaines, Illinois have been charged with endangering the life or health of a child after giving kids gummy bears containing melatonin.

WLS-TV in Chicago reports officers responded to a report of a suspicious incident on Friday. Police said the teachers admitted to distributing the sleep aid to the class of 2-year-olds to help them calm down before nap time.

The three teachers, 32-year-old Kristen Lauletta, 19-year-old Jessica Heyse, and 25-year-old Ashley Helfenbein, said they didn't think it was inappropriate because melatonin is only an over-the-counter sleep aid.
