Walmart has published a statement to Facebook in response to a viral video showing carts of food being thrown away at a store in Celina, Ohio. Here's the full statement.
We have fielded a number of calls regarding a video circulating on Facebook showing our associates throwing out food, and we wanted our customers and community to understand the situation. Unfortunately, due to a tornado that affected our store in Celina, Ohio on November 5, the food being disposed of was unsafe for consumption after the store lost power for 14 hours. Per internal and health department policies, we followed proper procedures by disposing of the food.
The video was originally posted by Gary Joe Ahrns on November 6. It shows Ahrns inspecting the carts of food, noting that the food has yet to expire. He asks a store employee if he can take any of the food, and he's told it's not allowed. The video doesn't mention the tornado or the power outage. The video has been viewed over 7.4M times.
