(Meredith) -- Six years in, Maria Sosa wanted out of her marriage to her husband Ramon and an end to bitter divorce proceedings. But this time when she hired someone to end it, she didn’t walk into a lawyer’s office. She wanted an assassin.
Her plan backfired, though. The hitman she hired turned out to be a friend of her husband, the Houston Chronicle reported, and instead of killing him, the man gave him the bad news. His wife was trying to have him killed.
Ramon turned to local authorities for help, and together they set out to catch Maria red-handed. An undercover agent posing as a hitman met Maria, who paid $500 and some jewelry as a down payment for the murder, according to an affidavit used at her trial. She agreed to pay $2,000 and hand over her husband’s truck once the job was done.
“No, I want him dead,” the affidavit shows Maria saying when asked if she just wanted her husband beat up.
Ramon then worked with the police to stage his death, and fake graphic photos of his “murder.” The undercover agent then met with Maria a second time, showed her the photos and told her the job had been completed. According to the affidavit, Maria paid the agent another $1,000, shook his hand and smiled as she left the car.
Once charged with the crime, Maria pleaded guilty to criminal solicitation of murder and was sentenced to 20 years in prison. She is eligible for parole after five years because of the plea bargain. If the case had gone to trial, she could have faced a life sentence.
The murder-for-hire trial ended in 2016, and now Ramon has a new love in his life, according to an interview he gave to the Daily Mail. He told the news outlet that he felt justice had been served, but he’d never be the same man again.
