Valley woman's Firebird costume design is a winner 

A local designer wins a costume design contest by an international company. The costume is being manufactured at Tempe's fashion incubator this week and sold online right now in time for Halloween. 

  • Ellen Dayan of Tiger Lily Dress Shop won the contest with her Phoenix Firebird design 
  • The costume is being manufactured now at FABRIC, Tempe's fashion incubator and proceeds go to the non-profit to provide classes and workshops for future designers. 
  • More than 180 labels produce goods out of this facility, from designing to sewing to hosting fashion shows 
  • Halloween is around the corner if you can rock this costume, shop local and give it a try

Bikes, a balcony and some beers

Just like it sounds, take one balcony, some bikes and beers and you have a party. Every Thursday the Crescent Ballroom and Slippery Pig Bike Shop sponsor a fun event, riders gather at the crescent, head out on a spin around town, and end up back on the crescent balcony for some beers. Pollack attempts Guinness Book of World Records

Michael Pollack, known for his Tempe movie theatre, and as a Valley philanthropist, is now attempting to be known for the Guinness Book of World Records. This morning, an official adjudicator will be counting his more than 6,000 pieces within his collection, as he attempts to set a world record for the largest collection of advertising statues.

Game Day Foodie: Cardinals vs 49ers

Cardinals took a hit on Monday night football, but Heather Walker's got her hopes up for this weekend's game against the San Francisco 49ers. Get your appetites ready, as this week's theme is comfort food in bread bowls. 

-    San Francisco is well known for its sourdough bread and its fresh seafood
-    We're doing BREAD BOWLS this week with clam chowder for the 49ers
-    We need some comfort food after Monday night's loss, so we have a Big Red's Fancy Mac n Cheese Bowl

San Francisco 49ers Clammy Handed Chowder
Prep Time: 15 minutes / Cook Time: 30 minutes / Servings 2 Bread Bowls
Ingredients:
2 six-inch Sourdough bread bowls, hollowed out
2 tbsp. butter
3 tbsp. flour
2 stalks celery, chopped
1/2 medium yellow onion, chopped
2 cups vegetable stock
1 cup heavy cream
2 fresh bay leaves
3 medium potatoes, cut into 1" cubes
2 ten oz. cans of whole baby clams
2 tbsp. chopped fresh parsley
1/4 tsp. each salt and pepper

Steps:
In a large saucepan, combine the butter, onions and celery.  Cook on medium heat until veggies are soft and butter is melted, about 3-4 minutes.  Stir in the flour to create a roux with the veggies.  Add the vegetable stock, cream, bay leaves and potatoes.  Season with salt and pepper and stir until combined.
Bring the mixture to a boil and reduce to a simmer.  Allow to cook for about 15-20 minutes until the potatoes are soft.  Stir in the clams and allow them to heat through, about another 5 minutes.  Transfer to the bread bowls, top with fresh parsley and serve.
**Note: This taste better the longer it rests.  It's even better the next day!
 
Arizona Cardinals Red Bird Buffalo Bacon Mac N Cheese Bowls
Prep Time: 15 minutes / Cook Time: 30 minutes / Servings: 2 Bread Bowls
Ingredients:
2 six-inch Sourdough bread bowls, hollowed out
2 large, bone in chicken breasts, grilled and chopped
1 lb. penne pasta
8-10 strips center cut bacon, chopped
4 cups heavy cream
16 oz. shredded four cheese blends
4 tbsp. buffalo wing sauce
2 tbsp. marinara sauce
1/2 tsp. onion powder
1/2 tsp. garlic powder
1/2 tsp. each salt and pepper
2 large scallions, chopped

Steps:
Heat a grill or grill pan to high heat.  Grill the chicken breasts on high heat until the internal temperature reaches 165 degrees.  Remove from the heat, allow the meat to rest about 7 minutes, de-bone and chop the meat.  Set aside to cool until ready to use. 
Bring a large pot of heavily salted water to a boil.  Add the penne, cook until al dente, about 6 minutes.  Drain the water and set the pasta aside until ready to serve.
Heat a large skillet to high heat.  Add the bacon, cook on high heat for about 7-10 minutes until crispy.  Remove the bacon from the pan with a slotted spoon and transfer to a bowl that's been lined with a paper towel.  Discard the drippings, but use the same pan to cook the cheese sauce.
In the same skillet, add the heavy cream and the shredded cheese.  Stir in the wing sauce, marinara, onion powder, garlic powder, salt and pepper.  Whisk on medium heat until the sauce is smooth and creamy.
Using a large pot (I used the pot from the pasta) combine the cheese sauce, chicken and pasta.  Stir until combined and allow the mixture to rest for about 5 minutes, so the pasta can absorb some of the sauce and finish cooking.  Transfer the mixture to the bread bowls and top with the bacon and chopped scallions.  Serve immediately.

Hope for Hollis

Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma (DIPG). DIPG has an average survival of one year from diagnosis. After 9 months of fighting, Hollis passed away in January of this year. Hollis' parents, Shane and Shawnee Doherty, continue to honor their son's legacy by tirelessly working on the organization the Doherty family started when he was diagnosed called Hope Through Hollis. The hope? To raise money in order to fund research for this devastatingly rare disease. To do this, Hope Through Hollis has partnered with TGen, a non-profit organization focused on developing earlier diagnostics and smarter treatments.

Dinosaurs are coming to the Valley

Mark your calendars! The Phoenix Zoo is becoming "the land of the lost." Today the zoo is busy prepping for the arrival of twenty-three prehistoric creatures. They'll descend onto the zoo's "Desert Lives Trail" and will offer guests an unforgettable self-guided expedition beginning Oct 3rd for members, and Oct 6th to the general public. 

"Dinosaurs in the Desert" will open to ACNC/Phoenix Zoo members on October 3 5, with the general public grand opening taking place October 6-8, 2017. The exhibit will be $4 for Phoenix Zoo members and $5 for general public, and will take approximately 25-30 minutes to roam or spend longer if you choose! The self-guided tour includes the animatronic dinosaur structures which move and make various sounds including the infamous roar of a tyrannosaurus rex. Guests will also have the chance to become a paleontologist as they sift through a fossil dig in search of ancient artifacts. 

Several of the dinosaurs are custom painted to represent colors and patterns of today's Arizona desert animals. Below are just a few of the exciting patterns that are represented: 

  •     Carnotaurus painted like a jaguar
  •     Edomontonia painted like a Gila monster
  •     Coelophysis painted like a Gamble's quail
  •     Diabloceratops painted like a desert spiny lizard
  •     Citipati painted like a Chiricahua leopard frog

Also featured among the custom painted dinosaurs will be the two grand prize winners whose designs were chosen from more than 1,000 entries. The Stegosaurus mother and baby will proudly display these amazing works of art. 

As part of the exhibit, educational signage will also be found with each dinosaur, highlighting size and interesting facts known about that particular species, including how their adaptations compare to modern species. Interpretive guides from the ACNC/Phoenix Zoo as well as local experts will be on hand to answer guest inquiries and provide insight into the fascinating world of the prehistoric era. 

Dinosaurs in the Desert will also be on open during several of the Zoo's upcoming events, including Roars & Pours, Howl-O-Ween and the Zoo's annual holiday light show; ZooLights.
