The Garden Guy: How to overseed your lawn

As temperatures start to drop, it is time to start thinking about over seeding your lawn. Garden Guy, Dave Owens, has tips and information to make sure your winter lawn is lush and green.

Overseeding
There's one thing we have to start thinking about, and that's overseeding. Take a look at this lawn. Right now, we've got good seed to soil content and we'll show you how to put the seed down, but this is what you have to have. If you don't have it, you're going to have to start holding back on the water, start lowering that lawn mower and maybe a little bit of light dethatching with a dethatching rake similar to what you're seeing here. It's the ideal situation for creating that real green lawn over the winter months. We call this overseeding. We use a little bit of what we call perineal rye grass and this is what it looks like. This is a very inexpensive grass and you want to use a perineal, not an annual, and it does very well - about 1 to 2 pounds per 100 square feet over your lawn. Using a lawn spreader like this will give you a lot better or even coverage on the lawn. After you do that, think about covering it up because the birds will want to find the seed. So, we utilize a little bit of compost. Not only is compost a good seed cover, but it's a good fertilizer. About 1/8 of an inch to a 1/4 of an inch over the top of your seed bed is the ideal situation for not only lightly fertilizing that lawn but also holding that moisture in. It's real important that you keep it about as wet as a damp sponge and you want to water about 3-5 times per day. A little bit of plant maximizer will also go a long way. This is something else we put on there to help with the germination. It's called plant maximizer and it's got a lot of humates in it and also decreases the amount of moisture you're going to need to put on that lawn itself. So, once you do that, you're going to be watering about 3-4 weeks. It's going to come up about 2 inches tall. From there Start mowing. After that, regular fertilization, and you're on your way to a nice winter type lawn.
