Phoenix woman delivering newspapers hit by suspected drunk driver

PHOENIX (3TV/CBS 5) -

A woman was hospitalized Saturday morning after the car she was in was struck by a suspected drunk driver.

According to Phoenix police, a 21-year-old man was speeding westbound on Baseline Road near 24th Avenue when he lost control and crashed into another car that was stopped in a driveway. 

A 53-year-old woman was in the car at the time. She was taken to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries where she remains in critical condition. 

Police said the victim was in the driveway and was delivering newspapers.

The 21-year-old driver also sustained serious injuries. Police said criminal charges are pending further investigation.

Police said officers believe the suspect was impaired.
