(3TV/CBS 5) -

A brush fire burning in the median on Interstate 17 at milepost 249 is causing extensive southbound delays, according to the Arizona Department of Transportation.

Traffic was backed up about 15 miles. Motorists should consider taking an alternate route, including State Route 260 through Camp Verde to SR 87 through Payson.

The brush fire is about 30 acres in size.

We talked to some of the drivers who found themselves stuck in the traffic. Most seemed pretty patient, considering the wait.

"Just waiting in line like everyone else," said one driver.

"Well, I'm okay waiting," another told us.
