PHOENIX (3TV/CBS 5) -

"Dinosaurs in the Desert" is descending on the Phoenix Zoo in early October and will offer guests an unforgettable up-close experience with 23 prehistoric creatures.

Dinosaurs in the Desert offers a self-guided expedition that will take approximately 25 to 30 minutes to roam at the Arizona Center for Nature Conservation (ACNC) at the Phoenix Zoo.

ACNC and Phoenix Zoo members will have access to the exhibit exclusively on October 3 to 5 and will have its grand opening to the general public on October 6 to 8.

The exhibit will cost $4 for Phoenix Zoo members and $5 for the general public.

Dinosaurs in the Desert will include animatronic dinosaurs scattered throughout the trail which move and make sounds including the tyrannosaurus rex's infamous roar.

Also included in the exhibit is an opportunity to become a paleontologist as guests can sift through a fossil dig, in search of ancient artifacts.

Several of the dinosaurs are custom painted to represent colors and patterns of Arizona's desert animals. The Phoenix Zoo provided a short list of some of the patterns that will be represented:

  • Carnotaurus painted like a jaguar
  • Edomontonia painted like a Gila monster
  • Coelophysis painted like a Gamble's quail
  • Diabloceratops painted like a desert spiny lizard
  • Citipati painted like a Chiricahua leopard frog

Among the custom-painted dinosaurs will be two grand-prize winners whose designs were chosen from more than 1,000 entries.

Dinosaurs in the Desert will be open during several of the Phoenix Zoo's upcoming events, including Roars and Pours, Howl-O-Ween and ZooLights.

Several local companies are sponsoring the seven-month long exhibit including Fry's Food Stores, Coca-Cola, Groupon and Risas Dental.
