Cardinals sign running backs Chris Johnson and D.J. Foster

The Arizona Cardinals signed running backs Chris Johnson and D.J. Foster on Tuesday after placing running back David Johnson on injured reserve.

Foster (6-0, 195) is a former Arizona State standout that entered the NFL with the Patriots in 2016 as an undrafted rookie free agent. The Scottsdale, AZ native and Saguaro High School graduate played in three games with New England as a rookie and had seven carries for 24 yards and one reception for two yards. He was also inactive for 13 other games and all three postseason contests, including New England’s Super Bowl LI victory. Foster was released by the Patriots following the preseason on September 2 and re-signed to New England’s practice squad the following day.

While at Arizona State, Foster played in 53 games and finished with 2,355 rushing yards and 18 touchdowns on 444 carries and had 2,458 receiving yards and 14 touchdowns on 222 receptions. 

Johnson (5-11, 203) played in the preseason with the Cardinals after re-signing on July 20 before being released on September 2. He played in 15 games (nine starts) with Arizona the past two seasons and had a team-high 814 yards on 196 carries (4.2 yard avg.) with four 100-yard rushing games with the Cardinals in 2015. Johnson is third among active players with 9,537 rushing yards and since entering the NFL in 2008 ranks top-five in attempts (4th-2,118), and yards from scrimmage (5th-11,749).

He is a three-time Pro Bowl selection and was first-team All-Pro in 2009 when he was also named NFL Offensive Player of the Year with Tennessee after leading the league with 2,006 rushing yards, becoming the sixth player in league history to top 2,000 rushing yards in a season. Johnson has run for 55 touchdowns in his nine-year NFL career with the Titans (2008-13), Jets (2014) and Cardinals (2015-16) and also has 302 receptions for 2,212 yards (7.3 yard avg.) and nine receiving touchdowns in 126 career games (108 starts).

Foster will wear jersey #37 and Johnson will wear jersey #23.

In addition, the team has re-signed tackle Givens Price to the practice squad and has released cornerback Ryan Lewis and running back James Summers from the practice squad.  

Price (6-4, 310) was with the Cardinals during the preseason until he was released on September 2. He played in one game last season with the Cardinals after spending the first 14 weeks of the season on the team’s practice squad. Price originally joined the Cardinals in as an undrafted rookie free agent from Nebraska in 2016.
