MESA, AZ (3TV/CBS 5) -

"We need something that is life proof that can handle us," said Kevin Shoemaker, co-founder of Tough Tie.

After years of wearing ties for work, Kevin Shoemaker and Skylar Bennett were sick of spending hundreds of dollars for ties that weren't doing the job.

"Wearing them every day, spilling on them at lunch or our knocking on doors and they get sweaty, gross or something falls on it and you start ruining your ties," said Shoemaker.

The guys began researching tie fabrics, stitching and washability. After realizing there were no ties on the market that had any of those qualities, the two took matters into their own hands and the idea of Tough Tie was born. And this past January, they started selling the ties online.

"The material we use is only machine washable, it's the main seam, the interlock stitch and the fusing material on the inside," said Bennett.

They also have a microfiber cloth on the end that you can use to clean your phone or glasses.

The tie line started with 10 designs. Then a few months later, it expanded with new styles and now they are introducing new fabrics.

"The liquid repellent line," said Bennett.

That's right, liquid repellent. It's the next new tie they are launching soon.

"All of our ties are anywhere from $29 to $36," said Shoemaker.

They even have ties for kids. So who comes up with the designs?

"We come up with some ourselves and our wives because they are a bit more fashion forward than we are," said Bennett.

The ties are made in America and Bennett and Shoemaker are hoping in the next year to venture into other clothing apparel.

"Grow it as big as we can and then license the technology to a huge corporation and have better ties for the entire world," said Shoemaker.
