PHOENIX (3TV/CBS 5) -

The Grand Marshal of the 47th Annual National Bank of Arizona Fiesta Bowl Parade will be Arizona Coyotes legend, Shane Doan. As Grand Marshal, Doan will lead the parade on December 30, 2017.

“I’ve had a chance to work with him for 11 years at the Coyotes and so I knew him as a player, but also I knew him as a person. When it came time that he was retiring I thought it is a great way to honor him for all the great things that he had done for the community,” said Mike Nealy, executive director of the Fiesta Bowl.

Doan is the longest-term professional athlete in Arizona history, spending 20 years in the Valley with the Coyotes. He was first drafted by the Winnipeg Jets in 1995 and followed the team when they relocated to the Valley. As one of the most decorated players and captains in hockey, Doan is the all-time leader in several categories for the Winnipeg Jets/Arizona Coyotes including, 1,540 games, 402 goals, 570 assists and 128 power-play goals. After a successful career Doan announced his retirement last week.

“During my playing career, I never had the chance to experience the Fiesta Bowl Parade and, for my first one, it’ll be incredible to lead the way,” said Doan.

“Part of what makes the Parade so special is that groups from within our community get to be a part of the parade and each year, the event comes together as a direct result of the community, the dedicated volunteers and the support from National Bank of Arizona and 3TV,” Nealy said

A combination of more than 2,500 men, women, children, floats, balloons, and animals participate in the National Bank of Arizona Fiesta Bowl Parade each year.

Groups from Arizona, California, Utah, Nevada, New Mexico and the competing universities in the Fiesta Bowl will create unique parade floats, march in high school and university bands, celebrate equestrian displays, drive specialty cars, perform and join more than 100,000 fans to take part in the experience.

The parade will pay tribute to the Valley of the Sun through the theme “Champions of the Community.”

“Building community is a primary focus for National Bank of Arizona and by continuing to partner with the Fiesta Bowl in this Valley tradition, we are supporting the thousands of volunteers, participants, organizations and fans that make this event so special,” said Curt Hansen, Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer at National Bank of Arizona.
