TEMPE, AZ (3TV/CBS 5) -

The Arizona Cardinals lost their opener to the Detroit Lions.  The team is going to lose star running back David Johnson for part of the season following his wrist injury.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter tweeted Tuesday that Cardinals are placing Johnson on the injured reserve list.

Schefter added Johnson still has a chance to return this season.

The earliest Johnson can return this season is during the eighth week.

Bruce Arians announced Monday afternoon that star running back David Johnson has a dislocated wrist and will probably require surgery.

Cardinals head coach added that Johnson was seeking a second opinion.

Johnson was limited to 23 yards rushing on 11 carries, and had six receptions for 68 yards.

He was hoping to chase history again in 2017, after finishing last season 121 yards from becoming just the third NFL player in history to gain 1000 rushing and receiving yards.

Arians said that Johnson suffered the wrist injury when he fumbled in the second half.

Schefter‏ first reported Monday that Johnson was meeting with wrist specialists and surgery was possible.

In other injury news, Arians announced that starting left tackle D.J. Humphries has an MCL sprain and will miss 1-2 weeks.

Arians added that re-signing running back Chris Johnson, who was cut during the preseason, may be an option.

The Cardinals travel to Indianapolis on Sunday to play the Colts.
