YOUNGTOWN, AZ (3TV/CBS 5) -

Authorities have identified the man who was killed during an encounter with sheriff's deputies Sunday night.

Maricopa County Sheriff's Office spokesman Sgt. Calbert Gillett said sheriff's deputies and El Mirage police had been called to an apartment complex around 9 p.m. near 113th Avenue and Grand Avenue after reports of gunfire in the area.

Officers evacuated nearby units and then came upon 22-year-old Erick Perez, who was holding a gun in one hand and two knives in the other, said Gillett.

Gillett said Perez, of Youngtown, was shot after he came at a police officer, armed with a gun and two knives.

When he lunged toward an El Mirage officer, he shot Perez. No officers were injured in the encounter. Perez died at the scene.

Gillett said Perez had several prior arrests and had served time in the Arizona Department of Corrections for arson, burglary, leaving the scene of an accident and parole violation.
