PHOENIX (3TV/CBS 5) -

Three people are in serious condition after a crash ended with their vehicle upside down in a Phoenix canal, police said.

The accident occurred around 1:00 a.m. Monday morning near 51st Avenue and Osborn Road.

A gray sedan heading at a high rate of speed southbound on 51st Avenue lost control, hitting a curb and an SRP irrigation box causing it to flip and eject a man and woman. They landed just a few feet before the canal.

The car eventually landed upside down in a canal with waist deep water with a man still inside.

The man was able to get himself out of the vehicle before firefighters quickly rescued him from the canal.

All three people were transported to local trauma centers in serious condition with bad head injuries.

Police said impairment is suspected and the crash is still under investigation.

51st Avenue will be closed between Osborn Road and Crittenden Lane for an extended period of time.
