Remembering 9/11: Memorial events in the Phoenix area

From pancake breakfasts for first responders to candlelight vigils, multiple memorial events are planned around the Phoenix-area in remembrance of the 16th anniversary of September 11.

The events honor the nearly 3,000 Americans who lost their lives after the attacks on American soil on September 11, 2001.

Here is a list of all the memorials happening in the Phoenix area:

  • Tempe Healing Fields - The 14th Annual Healing Fields display at Tempe Beach Park started on Friday, Sept. 8 and will go through Monday, Sept. 11. A tribute ceremony with music and prayer will be held at 5:46 a.m. on Sept. 11 and at 7 p.m. there will be a candlelight vigil with keynote speaker Donna Bird
  • Phoenix City Hall - At 9 a.m. at Phoenix City Hall,  Phoenix Police Chief Jeri Williams and Phoenix Fire Chief Kara Kalkbrenner will speak and the Fire and Police Honor Guards will join together to play 'Amazing Grace' and perform a bell ceremony. 
  • Sedona Fire District - At 9:11 a.m. the Sedona Fire District will host a ceremony in front of Fire Station 6.
  • Muslims for Life Blood Drive - The 'Muslims for Life' campaign is holding a blood drive to honor the victims of the September 11 attacks at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Chandler from 2:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
  • Desert Harbor Elementary School will hold the sixth annual "Walk of Honor" at 9 a.m. Police, fire, military or emergency service personnel are invited to attend this event and will begin in the school's multipurpose room for pastries and coffee. Morning announcements will include a commemorative message followed by a "Walk of Honor" where staff and students will escort special guests to recognize and honor them for their service. 
  • Frontier Elementary School will hold their annual Heroes Breakfast from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. for firefighters, police officers, first responders and soldiers. Breakfast includes hotcakes for heroes, pancakes for police, flapjacks for firefighters, scrambled eggs, hash brown casserole, sausage, milk, juice and coffee. 
  • Lake Pleasant Elementary School will hold an assembly at 8:15 a.m. in the multipurpose room where the band and choir will perform, a memorial video will be shown and patriotic readings will be given by students and staff.  
  • Oasis Elementary School At 8:05 a.m., Oasis students and staff will have a moment of silence while gathered around the flag pole. Local first responders will be presented with letters/cards of appreciation from students. 
  • Peoria High School band and AFJROTC will perform an annual flag ceremony at the flagpole at 7:35 a.m. All classes who wish to observe are invited. The band will play the National Anthem as the flag is raised and then Taps as it is lowered to half-staff. The Cadet Commander will give a presentation to students and staff who are present. 
  • Sundance Elementary School will have a remembrance ceremony by the flagpole at 9:11 a.m. They will also have a guest speaker and will play music in honor of those who lost their lives on 09/11. 
  • Vistancia Elementary School will commemorate the day by providing a learning opportunity for their students through their American Flag display. The display will be put together by eighth-grade social studies teacher, Jody Beltram.
