(3TV/CBS 5) -

Nearly half a million children in Arizona don’t know where their next meal will come from. Food insecurity is an epidemic in the Phoenix metro area, with empty stomachs distracting kids from focusing in the classroom.

Throughout the month of September, 3TV Arizona’s Family is joining forces with Food City, Bashas’, Safeway and Albertsons to fight childhood hunger in our state.

Shoppers can make a monetary donation at the checkout register to help local nonprofits feed hungry children.

Money raised during this important campaign will benefit the following organizations:

AZ Brain Food, which provides food for needy school children over the weekend,

Kitchen on the Street, a faith-based non-profit that provides food and hope to children in need through a food backpack program,

St. Mary’s Food Bank, which feeds hungry families throughout Phoenix and 13 Arizona counties,

Desert Mission Food Bank, which provides free and reduced cost food programs, nutrition education and groceries to families in need through a market-format like a regular grocery store,

United Food Bank, which provides access to nutritious food by serving as community bridge between those who want to help and those who need it,

Yuma Community Food Bank, which creates and enhances emergency and supplemental food programs for families throughout Yuma County,

Community Food Bank of Southern, which provides hunger relief, health, education and community development assistance across five counties of Southern Arizona.
