PHOENIX (3TV/CBS 5) -

Maricopa County Animal Care and Control (MCACC) has extended its free adoption weekend through to Sunday, Sept. 10 for dogs over 6 months old.

Jose Santiago of MCACC said that last weekend's free adoption event was a huge success, but that there are still animals that need homes at the shelter.

"Since Saturday, we have managed to place more than 400 animals into new homes," Sanitago said. "Since we have been continuing to take in strays and owner surrenders here at the shelter, to date, our current dog count is at 503."

That number seems high but it's a great improvement from last weekend's count, which was 700.

If you are interested in adopting a free dog, call MCACC at (602) 506-7387 or go to its website.

The free adoptions are available at both locations: 2500 S 27th Ave and 2630 W Rio Salado Pkwy

They are open from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Friday and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.
