From 3TV intern to the anchor desk at SportsCenter, Scottsdale native Matt Barrie has been on quite a ride.

“ESPN wasn’t a thought at first,” said Barrie, who was back in town to emcee the Fiesta Bowl kickoff luncheon. “It was, I love sports, I love football, I love every sports team we have here in Arizona. I want to be involved in it in some way.”

Barrie was an intern at Channel 3 at the turn of the millennium. Barrie says former 3TV sports anchor Gil Tyree was one of his mentors.

“He was an awesome intern,” said Tyree, who now lives in Philadelphia. “He helped me a great deal on Skylights and ASU football. Love him like a son."

Barrie’s sports story started at Saguaro High School. He was a linebacker for the Sabercats and helped lay the foundation to one of the state’s premier programs.

“We won the first championship in 1995.  I know they win state championships all the time now, but we won the first. We had Mike Brown on that team. He went to Nebraska and had a great career with the Chicago Bears,” said Barrie, a Scottsdale native. “I’ve been the same height since I was 12 years old. I was 20 pounds heavier and I actually could play a little football.”

Barrie originally enrolled at U of A but switched to ASU to pursue being a sportscaster. If you watch closely, you can catch Barrie stumping for the Sun Devils while reading highlights.

“I stump for the Sun Devils a lot. One, when people call them the Arizona State Wildcats,” says the ASU alum. “Anytime I get an opportunity to push for them, when something good goes down... I know when D.J. Foster was here we were showing a lot of ASU highlights. And any time you watch SportsCenter, 10 times out of 10, if James Harden is doing something, or if Dustin Pedroia is doing something, it always comes with Arizona State.”

Arizona will always be home and Matt Barrie will always be a member of Arizona’s Family.

“I could tell you stories about Channel 3 that would keep you entertained for hours,” said Barrie.  All I can tell you is anything Gil Tyree ever told me, from the time I was at Arizona State, through my first small market job in Wisconsin through Dallas and now SportsCenter, I’ve used along the way. I can’t tell you how pivotal that internship was and the community at Channel 3 was for my career.”

Barrie won a national and regional RTDNA Edward R. Murrow Award, five Lonestar Emmys, and the “Salute to Excellence” NABJ Award.
