GLENDALE, AZ (3TV/CBS 5) -

All three branches of the Glendale Public Library increased their open hours effective Sept. 1. The extended hours will not increase staff or costs to Glendale taxpayers.

“Last year, the library was able to purchase Bibliotheca SmartServe All-In-One Bill Pay machines so that library staff would no longer need to serve as dedicated cashiers for customers paying cash fines and fees. By freeing staff time from reconciling cash, the installation of these machines has enabled scheduling efficiencies,” Chief Librarian Mike Beck said.

The three locations will be opening on various days an hour early, opening at 12 p.m. instead of 1 p.m. The Main Glendale Library will open early on Mondays and Wednesdays. The Velma Teague Branch Library will be opening early on Mondays and Thursdays. The Foothills Branch Library will be opening early on Mondays.

“Our community library users have asked for more hours and we have heard them. We are pleased that we can help improve the lives of our users by opening earlier on Mondays. This is another positive step towards a bigger and better library for our community,” said Kristin Fletcher-Spear, administrative librarian for the Foothills Branch Library.

During the economic downturn, the City of Glendale was required to cut library hours. With frequent library customer requests to be open more hours, library administration was committed to finding scheduling and staffing efficiencies that would allow for more operational hours.

“This will result in five additional hours per week and 260 operating hours annually system-wide, without an impact or increase to the General Fund,” said Beck.  “The modern library is a great, welcoming community gathering space, full of free print and electronic resources and knowledgeable staff, now with greater access for our customers.”
