TEMPE, AZ (3TV/CBS 5) -

Nineteen years in and Cardinals kicker Phil Dawson is still going strong.

"My life is not very romantic,” said Dawson, the long time Browns and 49ers kicker. "When they say field goal, I trot out onto the field and I kick a field goal."

The 42-year-old Dawson signed with the Cardinals in the offseason. He's currently 15th on the all-time scoring list, 1 point behind Hall of Famer Jan Stenerud.

Dawson likes to keep things simple, but you don't hang around this long without being one of the wisest players in the league.

"I joke with people, it's the' momma plan,' I call it. If you eat right and go to bed when you should, good things seem to happen. With experience, not waste energy on things you shouldn't. I fully expect to do things I've done in the past if not even better," said Dawson.

Dawson's leg is still powerful. He’s got tricks of the trade that you only get with the experience of 19 NFL seasons.

3TV/CBS 5 caught video of Dawson celebrating after kickoff last season in San Francisco. He was near the bottom of the league in touchbacks but Dawson says he was asked to "place the ball."

Unlike many of his counterparts, Dawson was trying to initiate a return.

"I love that part of the game,” said Dawson. “It reminds me of back in the day. To set up your defense is exciting.”

Dawson one of 14 new faces here on the Cardinals in 2017.

Guard Alex Boone officially joined the Cardinals and was in the locker room on Wednesday. The long time 49er joked about the time he got fined when things got physical in the trenches against the Cardinals.

“It felt a little weird,” said Boone about walking the Cardinals locker room. “But at the same time, it felt right."

The Cardinals open the season on Sunday at 10 a.m. in Detroit.
