Dave Owens, The Garden Guy: Heat Stressed Plants

It's warm outside and your plants need as much attention as ever during this warm time. To start off place 2 to 3 inches of mulch around trees and shrubs, make sure to keep the mulch 2 to 3 inches away from the trunks and stems, this will help in conserving water. Watering is of course key with the mulch and you want to deep water. Deep watering is making sure the water penetrates the full depth of the root system. On trees, this is normally 1 to 3 feet, 1 to 2 inches on shrubs and 6 to 12 inches on lawns. If the water does not penetrate as deep as the root system, you will find your plants to be shallow-rooted, always stressed for water and they will sometimes show stress from lack of nutrients. Things not to do right now with your heat stressed plants are pruning, fertilizing and especially no synthetic fertilizers. To help protect your trees/citrus tree trunks remember to apply white wash paint to them which acts as a sunblock.
