Freedom Express train rides at Republic Services Arizona Celebration of Freedom
Each year brings new attractions to the Republic Services Arizona Celebration of Freedom, the state's "coolest independence festival." One of the new attractions this year is the Freedom Express, a trackless train presented by SRP, Valley Metro, Stacy and Witbeck and Sundt. The train will offer free rides to children and adults during the Republic Services Arizona Celebration of Freedom Tuesday, July 4 from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m.
There are several unique features to the Republic Services Arizona Celebration of Freedom. One is a Revolutionary War reenactment that will be held three times that evening from the reenactment group We Make History. Originally formed in Arizona, We Make History is now "bi-coastal" offering a variety of events not only in Arizona and the Southwest but also on the East Coast. Another unique feature returning this year is the Fallen Heroes Memorial honoring Arizona's fallen heroes from the war on terrorism in Iraq and Afghanistan. There will also be a naturalization ceremony with approximately 150 people being welcomed as new U.S. citizens.
The Republic Services Arizona Celebration of Freedom will be full of entertainment, live music, patriotic displays, family fun, fireworks and much more. It will be held at the Mesa Amphitheatre and Mesa Convention Center, 263 N. Center St., and along Center Street between Second Street and University Drive.
6p.m-10 p.m. (Fireworks approximately 9:30 p.m.)

Easy watermelon cake perfect for a BBQ
Valley food blogger Joanie Simon shows us this healthy and light alternative to a real cake.
- This is so easy, you can whip it up the day of the party.
- Be sure to use real whipped cream, not aerosol or Cool Whip.
- Use a piping bag to create pretty decorations and flourishes
- Use fruit and nuts to decorate.
- Be sure to refrigerate until you're ready to serve it.
Protect your pets from fireworks and fear
July 4 and 5 are the two busiest days for animal shelters. There are dozens of dogs who escaped their homes often due to the scary, loud fireworks on Independence Day. AAWL tells us how to protect your pet from the fear of fireworks.
How can you protect your dog? (If you're going to a fireworks show and won't be home)
- Thunder shirts
- Plenty of water (dogs pant when they're stressed)
- Safe kenneling practices
- Reggae music has been shown to relax dogs

Summer fancy food show trends
Breakfast ice cream? Valley food blogger Joanie Simon shows us the hippest items and trends from her recent visit to the Fancy Food Show.
- Low sodium and natural options like BOU Bouillion
- Sparkling water and low-calorie beverages are huge and are expanding into creative flavors like DRY soda and Bruce Cost Ginger Ale.
- Everyone's on the go, so easy, all natural, protein packed snacks are huge, like Nutzo's Chocolate Power Fuel and Tomer Kosher's beef jerky.
- Bees are back. Lots of honey and bee themed treats are a focus, including the whipped chocolate honey from Savannah Bee Co.
- Healthy indulgent creations are trending, like the "breakfast ice cream" from Snow Monkey
- Lots of unique gluten free and non-GMO trends, one of my favorites being a bread crumb / panko alternative with Watusee Foods' Chickpea Crumbs
