ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KOAT/CNN) -- A New Mexico woman is being evaluated at a psychiatric hospital after police said they found her husband’s mummified body inside a bedroom closet.

Deputies were serving an eviction notice at the woman’s foreclosed home in May when they smelled a dead body.

Police searched the home and found the body of the woman's husband on a mattress in the walk-in closet of their master bedroom. He was reportedly tucked under blankets, and his head was propped up on a pillow.

Officers also reported seeing baking soda and air fresheners throughout the closet.

The woman, whose name has not yet been released, admitted her husband died in April 2015, more than two years ago.

The couple’s son, Thomas Huerta, said he lives in California and tried to visit his parents last October, but no one answered the door. He said he's still in disbelief.

“I never would have imagined that he would be in the closet in a mummified state,” said Huerta. “I try not to think about it. It is very difficult.”

According to a police report, neighbors noticed the man hadn’t been around. When they asked his wife about his whereabouts, she told them he was preparing for the ministry.

The woman told police her husband suffered from chronic back pain so he often slept in the closet. She also said he had been coughing up bile, but refused to go to the hospital.

Authorities are still trying to determine how the man died.

It's unclear if the woman will face criminal charges.
