Garden Guy: Healthy summer lawns

You need to start thinking about getting your lawn in shape for summer, so here are a few tips: increase you watering time to allow for 1 to 3 inches of water per week and only water in the mornings. Also, check your sprinklers to make sure they are functioning correctly. Aerate your lawn, this allows oxygen to penetrate into the soil to create a healthy environment for the roots. Also, rake some compost and soil sulfur over the yard after doing this. By going organic, you are encouraging the beneficial macro and microorganisms that do so much to maintain the natural balance. Of course, when tending to that lawn you will come across your common insects like ants or if you have dogs you may find ticks and fleas, DE or diatomaceous earth can get rid of these to help protect yourself and your pets. When using DE, you need to use food grade which would not harm yourself or your pets. And when dealing with the lawn you must remember to pick up your pets’ waste as it is a breeding ground for pets, cleaning up as often is key. Bottom line is use only organic materials and keep your lawn healthy to prevent disease or pest problems, the natural way is the best way to enjoy a summer lawn.
