A man arrested in the death of his mother in Phoenix last week nearly decapitated her with a kitchen knife, authorities said Thursday.

Marlow Chiquito, 31, was being held on $1 million on suspicion of first-degree murder, Phoenix police said.

It's unclear if he has a lawyer yet.

Officers were called to an apartment on May 4 and found 63-year-old Maggie Chiquito on a reclining chair with a cut to her neck, police said.

She was pronounced dead at the scene by Phoenix Fire Department paramedics.

Maggie Chiquito and her husband picked up their son on May 2 in Flagstaff and brought him to Phoenix to visit family, authorities said.

The husband left during an argument between the mother and son, and he found his wife bleeding when he returned about 30 minutes later.

Police later spotted Marlow Chiquito shirtless and walking along the street near the crime scene with blood on his pants, court records show.

During questioning, police say the son was mad at his mother because she "put a hit on him," according to court documents.

He also said he drank a fifth of vodka and used methamphetamine prior to the killing, police said.
