The Garden Guy: "Warm weather protection"

"Here are a few tips that will get your plants on the right track as our temperatures start to increase. Water deeply and infrequently. By giving grasses, plants and trees long watering periods, you'll have to water less often. To water deeply, turn the hose or drip system on low and let it run for a long time. The soil has a high pH and holds a lot of salt. When water percolates deeply into the soil, it carries dangerous salts away from the plant's roots. Deeper watering means longer evaporation and will give you more bang for your watering buck. How do you know you're watering deeply enough? Try a soil robe. You can make one with a 5-foot segment of rebar. Simply bend a 1 foot long handle and mark 1 foot increments on the staff of the rebar. For trees, you should be able to push the staff 3 to 4 feet into the ground: 2 to 3 feet deep for shrubs; 1 foot for ground cover and 6 to 8 inches deep for lawn areas. The most critical component to keeping your plants healthy in the warm weather is mulch the top of your soil. It helps conserve moisture, buffer the soil from temperature extremes and stifle weeds. It also looks nice and increases the tilth of the soil, provides nutrients, keeps rain from compacting the soil and prevents erosion."
