TEMPE, AZ (3TV/CBS 5) -

Burglars cleaned all of the electronics out of a Tempe home this week, and also assaulted the family's dog.

"It's above and beyond disgusting," Katie Ulmer said of the attack on her dog, Cole.

Cole is a 140-pound black German shepherd, who Ulmer assumed would be loud and intimidating to anyone trying to break in.

The thief, or thieves, first tried to pry a door open Tuesday morning and then busted through the plastic on a closed doggie door.

Hours later, Ulmer's husband came home to find Cole cowering in a bedroom.

"I think he was in pain and frightened," Matt Ulmer said.

They say Cole is normally territorial, with a loud, deep bark. The Ulmers cannot figure out what exactly happened in the incident.

"I don't know if he tried to bite them or what. If I saw or heard a big dog, I wouldn't continue. They must've been extremely desperate," Katie said.

During a visit to the Ahwatukee Animal Care Hospital, Cole's vet said he seemed severely bruised.

Dr. Jeffrey Jenkins, a veterinarian, also said Cole is probably traumatized by the incident.

Tempe police dusted the home for prints, but have no suspects.
